iPhone 18 Pro: Dynamic Island Update and What to Expect (2026)

Think you know what the iPhone 18 Pro will look like? Think again. Contrary to recent rumors, Apple might not be ditching the Dynamic Island after all. Instead, a new leak suggests a more subtle evolution, one that keeps the familiar design element while shrinking it down and tucking away a key component. But here's where it gets interesting: the rumored left-side camera hole was apparently a misunderstanding, born from mistranslations of Asian sources. What's actually happening is Apple is relocating the infrared flood illuminator, a tiny Face ID sensor, under the display on the left side.

This raises the question: is Apple playing it safe with design, or are they strategically holding back a fully under-display Face ID for future models?

The main selfie camera, dot projector, and infrared camera will remain in a smaller, pill-shaped Dynamic Island at the center. This approach splits the difference between the current design and the long-rumored fully under-display Face ID. Display analyst Ross Young and leaker ShrimpApplePro have both supported this explanation, putting an end to speculation about a top-left corner placement or a complete Dynamic Island removal.

And this is the part most people miss: only the flood illuminator is small enough to be hidden under the screen without compromising performance. The other Face ID sensors need direct exposure, hence their continued presence in the Dynamic Island cutout. This means iPhone 18 Pro buyers can expect a cleaner, more streamlined look with the familiar centered interface, but with less black space encroaching on the display.

Apple, as usual, remains tight-lipped about design changes, but we can expect the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max to arrive in September with other upgrades like variable aperture cameras, TSMC's 2nm A20 chip, and Apple's in-house C2 modem.

So, what do you think? Is Apple's approach to the Dynamic Island a smart compromise, or a missed opportunity for a bolder design shift? Let us know in the comments!
